KR Rules & Guidance on Hull Structures
Study of cargo hold FE analysis methods, considering ship type characteristics: Independent tank type A gas carriers and ore carriers:
For Very Large Ore Carriers, a more accurate assessment is required at large openings and hopper knuckle joints
For Gas Carriers with independent tank type A, most of the vessels have three cargo holds or less and the entire hold(s) should be included in the FE model for an efficient structural analysis
- Development and revision of direct strength assessment for ship structure:
- The existing hold analysis method considers only local loads, which might have weaknesses such as blind spots and provide a less accurate assessment for some special purpose vessels.
- An improved method applies global loads such as hull girder bending moments and shear forces to the FE hold model so that the hold FE model behaves like an actual ship. A more accurate strength assessment will be derived because all of the structural characteristics of special purpose vessels will be included in the FE analysis.

Type A Independent Tank Gas Carrier Strength Assessment
Study of loads and strength assessment based on motion analysis for container carriers:1) Development of a simple formula for warping stress: where the torsional strength can be efficiently evaluated for various sized container carriers
2) Study for developing equivalent design wave and scantling formulas based on direct load analysis
3) Study on improving current hold analysis procedure considering new EDW loads and hull girder loads
2) Study for developing equivalent design wave and scantling formulas based on direct load analysis
3) Study on improving current hold analysis procedure considering new EDW loads and hull girder loads
- As it becomes necessary to improve current method of structural safety assessment, because of the increasing size of container carriers and the enforcement of IACS UR S11A and S34. KR is conducting the technical analysis above and the structural safety for container carriers will become more accurate as a result.
