As advised by the previous Technical Information(2016-IMO-02), the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’s Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004, will enter into force on 8 September 2017.

Moreover, in accordance with Res.A.1088(28), all ships constructed before 8 September 2017 that are classified to existing ships shall install a ballast water management syste

m which is capable of meeting the performance standard referred in regulation D-2 of BWM Convention by first IOPP renewal survey after the date of entry into force of the Convention.

Even though all existing ships are required to install a BWMS onboard ships by the first IOPP renewal survey after 8 September 2017, taking into account that new BWMSs type approved in accordance with the revised G8 guidelines are not yet commercially available in the market and USCG type approved BWMSs are widely available yet, some flag administrations have recently published their instructions on whether IOPP renewal survey could be completed early and de-harmonized with the remaining renewal surveys or not.
