On November 26, Korean Register signed an MOU with HMM Ocean Services to work together on "Eco-friendly and smart ship technology research and development''.  The MOU was formally signed at KR’s headquarters by senior representatives from both companies.

Under the agreement, KR and HMM Ocean Services will collaborate in various fields, including;

 
• Technology related to eco-friendly alternative fuels including liquefied natural gas (LNG)
• Technology related to improvement of fuel efficiency and smart ship solutions using
   IT technology
• Technological support relating to the safety regulations (IGF Code) of gas fuel propulsion
   ships.

Mr. Choi Jong-cheol, CEO of HMM Ocean Services said: “The global maritime industry is now focused on eco-friendly ships, decarbonization and digitalization all underpinned by big data. Working in cooperation with KR, both companies will be able to focus on delivering the industry's technology of the future.”

Mr. Lee Hyung-cheol, Chairman & CEO of KR, said, “This joint cooperation with HMM Ocean Service will enhance KR’s competitiveness through the development of essential technologies tailored to the needs of shipping companies, and it follows our successful cooperation with HMM on the newbuilding project of the world’s largest 24,000 TEU container ships.”

As the paradigm of ship technology has shifted to digital and eco-friendly ships, KR is actively conducting research into electric propulsion and alternative fuel technologies like hydrogen and ammonia, alongside digital-based technologies such as digital twin technology, state-based maintenance technology, and big data analysis technology.
