KR held the 31st IACS (International Association of Classification Society) Survey Panel on

April 2 via video conference.

The decision to hold the discussion online was as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic which has resulted in many international conferences being cancelled or postponed.

The meeting was led by Survey Panel Chairman KO Jae-hyun from KR and ‘attended’ by eleven IACS member class societies, including Norway, the US and China.  Russia was unable to join the meeting. The discussions covered 41 current issues, including the revision of IACS UR and PR (unified and procedural requirements) to reflect new obligations and countermeasures as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Chairman KO said, “Although there were difficulties such as meeting schedule constraints due to time differences between member countries and poor communication, we successfully completed the meeting, confirming our mutual cooperation and sharing opinions on the key  issues at this time of crisis.”

The Survey Panel is one of six IACS panels. It leads on establishment and interpretation of regulations and preparing recommendations relating to ship surveys. Most recently, the panel has worked on the establishment and revision of survey regulations for remote inspection technology (RIT, Remote Inspection Technology) and ESP tanker requirements for thickness measurement during precision inspection. The panel reflects the latest technology trends and shares new accumulated experiences.
