Korean Register (KR) has granted Approval in Principal (AIP) to EMEC Corporation for its new, dual-fueled, medium-range (MR) LNG tanker design which will be low-cost, high-efficiency and eco-friendly.
The alignment of the newly-developed MR tanker has been devised to maximise fuel efficiency, while the two IMO type-*, (independent self supporting) LNG fuel tanks are located in such a way as to ensure optimum vessel stability.
Having received recognition for its conceptual design of new ships as well as the retrofitting of scrubbers for both foreign and domestic shipping companies, EMEC expects significant market interest for this new LNG and diesel duel-fuel vessel.
Nam In-seop, executive vice president of EMEC said: “This new LNG dual-fuel propulsion vessel meets both the IMO’s forthcoming environmental regulations and the increasing demands of ship owners to reduce shipping costs.”
Executive vice-president of KR’s research and development division, Ha Tae-bum added: “The international regulations on air pollution emitted from ships require the design of new LNG-fueled vessels for various types of ships. We hope this certification will help to increase the number of orders for new LNG propulsion tankers .”
*The IMO describes two types of fuel tank for LNG carriers – membrane tanks and independent self-supporting tanks. The independent self-supporting tanks are divided into Type A, Type B and Type C tanks. Type C tanks are renowned for their safety and pressure reliability preventing leakage.
