Korean Register (KR) has granted Approval in Principal (AIP) to Chengxi Shipyard for its medium-range (MR) size tanker design, verifying the suitability of the vessel’s conceptual design.
Chengxi shipyard in Jiangyin, owned by China CSSC Holdings, is the largest shipyard group in China.
The new vessel has been developed through a Joint Development Project (JDP) involving several classification societies with specialist experience in MR sized tankers, including KR. The design applies cost effective structural elements and high design standards which have been developed through themutual cooperation of the JDP.
The MR size tanker (50K DWT Class) design is fully compliant with the Harmonized CSR (common structural rules) and the completed vessel is expected to significantly enhance Chengxi Shipyard’s business competitiveness.
Kang Ho-seong, head of KR’s China Headquarters said: “This joint development project has provided a valuable opportunity to demonstrate KR’s exceptional technical ability in the MR tanker sector. Our specialist expertise is gaining increasing recognition and we look forward to expanding our business activities and supporting China’s maritime industry further in the future”.
The AIP certificate was presented on 4 December by him to Lu Ziyou, Chairman, Chengxi Shipyard at the MR Tanker Promotion Council 2019, held at MARINTEC CHINA 2019 in Shanghai, China.
