On 30 October at the Convention on the Work of the Naval Military Corps, Young-seok Kim, head of KR’s Naval Business Center (left), and Sung-jae Park, head of the Korean Navy Military Police Corps, signed a business agreement agreeing to cooperate on naval accident investigations.
Concrete measures to strengthen cooperation between the two organisations were discussed at the signing ceremony, with the clear aim of identifying causes and enhancing accident prevention.
Under the agreement, the two agencies will share technical details and advice on accidents related to ship hull structure facilities, and will exchange information to prevent ship accidents in the future.
Sung-jae Park, head of the Navy Military Police Corps, said: “The MOU will pave the way for scientific investigation to prevent naval accidents” adding that he hoped that: “There will be wide and active exchanges to increase safety at sea, save people’s lives and prevent accidents.”
Young-seok Kim, head of KR's Naval Business Center, added: "KR will do its best to contribute to the prevention of naval maritime accidents and will conduct scientific investigations, applying its expert technology gathered from Korean merchant shipping."
As a member of International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), KR has extensive naval operations experience, including the class survey and certification of 3,000-ton domestically produced submarines (Jangbo-III).
In March 2018, the Navy Military Police Corps established the Marine Scientific Investigation Center to improve naval maritime accident investigation through the establishment of a special investigation team, the training of naval maritime accident specialists, and active work exchanges with related agencies.
