On 23 October, KR held a policy symposium to discuss the establishment of a port city fueled by eco-friendly hydrogen energy, with the Busan Metropolitan Government at the BEXCO Convention Hall.
Organised as a session at the Komarin Conference 2019, this initiative is designed to help reduce pollutants emitted from ports in preparation for the IMO's environmental regulations and to develop Busan port as a 'CO2-free clean hydrogen energy port'.
The first part began with a presentation by Kang-woo Chen, general manager of KR’s Future Technology Research Team, on 'Hydrogen ship technology for de-carbonization regulation, for the establishment of a zero-emission hydrogen port.'
In part 2, industry-academic panels, including policy experts from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, gathered to discuss the current status of technology for building clean ports and the future prospects.
Jeong-kie Lee, Chairman and CEO of Korean Register, commented: "KR is continuing its collaboration with Busan Port Authority applying its know-how acquired through years of research," adding: "We will provide the technical support to build a hydrogen energy port in Busan where experts from the maritime industry are gathered."
Last year, KR signed an agreement with Busan Port Authority to build hydrogen-based energy self-sufficient ports and to help build battery-powered electric propulsion vessels. KR has developed its industry-leading technical skills in preparation for the hydrogen economy era, helping to establish a clear roadmap for the national hydrogen economy and shipbuilding sectors.
