On 19 September, Jeong-kie Lee, Chairman and CEO Korean Register (KR) and Ho-seon Hwang, CEO Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) signed an Memorandum of Understanding, to work together to strengthen the competitiveness of the Korean shipping industry.
As a member of IACS (the International Association of Classification Societies) KR is a leading digitalized classification society, developing new maritime technology and undertaking significant industry research to help the industry address 2020 environmental regulations and the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution.
The KOBC was established to enhance the competitiveness of Korea’s maritime transport industry by supporting the development of eco-friendly, low-cost, high efficiency vessels, providing security of liquidity and provision of services to boost industrial growth.
Under the MoU, KR and KOBC intend to collaborate to develop a cooperative system for financial resources and maritime safety technology for new vessels.
Jeong-kie Lee, Chairman and CEO of KR, says “I am delighted to sign this MoU, we look forward to working together to create a symbiotic system to help shipowners and operators proactively and effectively manage increasing levels of international environmental regulations."
Ho-seon Hwang, CEO of KOBC, added “KOBC has supported the installation of eco-friendly equipment in more than 170 vessels including exhaust gas cleaning systems and ballast water treatment systems, and we will work closely with KR to develop more eco-friendly ship practices and enhanced equipment.”
In addition, to support future growth of the shipping industry, KR and KOBC
will extend their cooperation to cover shipping industry market analysis, information sharing and training.
