The 73rd MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee) approved the guidance on the development of a SIP for the consistent implementation of the 0.5% global fuel sulphur limit under MARPOL Annex VI that take effect from 1 January 2020.
Although the IMO (International Maritime Organization) did not make the SIP a mandatory requirement, administrations and port state control authorities may check the SIP to confirm the compliance with the 0.5% global fuel sulphur limit.
KR provides a free web-based SIP development service and is publishing technical information for ship owners and management companies to easily prepare the SIP.
1. Launching web-based ‘SIP’development service
1) Ship owners and management companies can access the web-based ‘SIP’ management
system (URL: http://gears.krs.co.kr/www/index_sip.html) and develop the SIP in
compliance with the IMO guideline. Also, the SIP can be printed out in electronic file format
when the required contents are inputted and evidence files are uploaded on the system.
2. Distribution of technical information for the development of SIP
1) For customers’ convenience, KR has developed the ‘Guidance for development of the SIP’.
This guidance not only specifies the development method of the SIP but also the technical
details that ship owners need to consider to use the low sulphur fuel oil for the compliance
with the 0.5% global fuel sulphur limit.
