KR and STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.(STXONS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on ‘Virtual and Mixed Reality Technology Development using 3D-based ship model and Information & Communication Technology(ICT) Cooperation' at KR’s headquarters.
Signed on 3 September, the agreement will allow the two companies to develop 3D model of ships owned by STXONS in a virtual environment. The two companies will also conduct joint research to develop simulators for training and customized additional services for ship owners.
The research includes the development of virtual reality technology training forship inspection, safety at workplace and emergency response. This technology is expected to deliver a more immersive and efficient training experience.
"The rapid development of the fourth industrial technology requires the creation of value added to built-in vessels," said Park Young-mok, executive director of planning and management division of STXONS at the signing ceremony. "We will develop customized additional services for shipowners using virtual reality technology, and improve the productivity of ships’ design and building."
"Based on KR's capabilities of virtual reality technology and those of STXONS' ship design, we are planning to develop virtual reality solutions for ships that can be applied to shipyards and classification," said Ha Tae-beom, executive vice president of KR’s R&D Division.
