Earlier this year, the Korean government announced the direction of the "Innovative Growth Strategy," and identified a hydrogen economy as one of the three strategic investment directions.
Hydrogen is the source of energy with the most potential to satisfy the increasingly stringent IMO regulations in the maritime sector. When these technologies are applied to ships, new safety regulations and inspection regulations for ships will be required.
KR started its research on hydrogen fuel cells in early 2010 and developed the "Guidance for Fuel Cell Systems on Board of Ships" in 2014, "Hybrid System Guideline" in 2016 and "Guidance for Large Battery Systems on Board of Ships" in 2018. KR has also been developing technologies for hydrogen fuel cell propulsion and hydrogen transportation through several government funded projects.
In the future, KR will develop rules and guidelines for hydrogen tankers and hydrogen fuel cell propulsion ships and will play a leading role in the realization of the hydrogen economy in maritime industries.
