KR signed an MOU with Busan Port Authority (BPA) in March to build an environmentally friendly port and as the first part of the MOU, confirmed a project management contract to oversee the replacement of the port guiding ship (Sanuri-ho) with a battery-propulsion ship, which will help to reduce fine dust in the area.
The new port guiding ship will be the first battery-propulsion ship in South Korea. Unlike conventional fossil-fuelled ships, the battery will be charged with electric power from the shore power grid and will be operated using only the charged electricity from the onboard battery.
In addition, the onboard power distribution system will be installed as a DC power distribution system. The DC power distribution system is a simple, stable distribution system because it can reduce power conversion losses, and is easy to connect the solar power or fuel cell power plants that are also DC power sources.
KR has been conducting research on electric propulsion vessels using battery systems and DC distribution. Through these projects, KR’s technical capability will contribute to the growth of the domestic shipbuilding industry and the further reduction of fine dust.
