At the IMO’s 70th MEPC meeting held in October 2016, a decision was made that all applicable vessels operating in the world’s seas, not the emission control areas are to use fuel oil with a sulphur content of less than 0.5% m/m, as from 1 January 2020 and two years have passed since then.
It means that ship owners should make a decision to select one of the options, either low sulphur fuel oil, LNG or to install an EGCS (exhaust gas cleaning system) on board to meet the new global SOx requirements which come into effect on 1 January 2020.
At present, demand for the installation of SOx scrubbers is increasing, and SOx scrubbers are being installed on many of our classed vessels. Therefore, we are publishing this technical information to provide updated information on EGCS for ship owners and surveyors involved in the installation, operation and inspection of EGCS.
