On 21 Nov, KR and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) signed an MoU covering the undertaking of joint research and development for LNG fueled bulk carriers.

Under the MoU, the two companies will conduct a hazard analysis into the fuel gas supply systems for LNG fueled vessels, over the next year and will jointly develop a design and evaluation process for the vessel.

The joint research will be of much greater value than pure conventional analysis because it will combine the quantitative analysis with the practical learnings from real simulations of different accident scenarios such as gas leaks, fire and explosion. In addition, the LNG fueled system which will verified through the joint research will then be used as a standard for future LNG fueled vessels.

KR already holds three patents in this area and has developed bespoke software for hazard analysis. In addition, KR is the very first in the class industry to have developed an LNG temperature distribution analysis.
