KR signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a joint development project to design LNG-fueled bulk carriers and gas supply system with STX O&S on 18 August.
Both companies have signed the MOU in order to preempt market demand for LNG fueled bulk carriers, which is expect to increase because of strengthening global environmental regulations.
KR and STX O&S will explore design options for an optimal LNG tank type, installation location, LNG-powered engine, fuel preparation room, and gas supply system, taking into consideration the expected route, while minimising the loss of cargo space.
The LNG fueled bulk carrier that will be developed through this joint project will not require any additional installation in order to meet the IMO’s SOx and NOx regulations.
Changwook Kim, the executive vice president and the head of KR’s technical division said "Using our many years of experience in LNG technology research, development and building LNG-fueled vessels, we will provide expert technical support to build these safe new vessels.”
