In 2015, KR established the Korean Maritime Cluster Networking, known as Mac-Net. Since then, 42 member organizations have joined and it has become one of the biggest maritime organizations in Korea, with KR holding the Chair since 2015.
On 16 March, Mac-Net held a very special technical seminar titled “How to prepare Korean smart shipping and shipbuilding for the future?” in the Korean National Assembly.
With the emergence of shipping 4.0, the fallout from the failure of Hanjin shipping and the downturn of the shipbuilding industry, it was felt that the Korean maritime industry might not grasp the era of shipping 4.0 and it was feared that the competitiveness of the Korean maritime industry would fall behind.
Therefore, this seminar was planned in response to the needs of not only the industry but also the Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans & Fisheries Committee of the National Assembly.
Two hundred experts including six congress men participated in the seminar, which involved representatives from KR, Mac-Net, Busan Metropolitan city, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and many more.
The seminar examined current issues including the essence of Industry 4.0, a roadmap of Korean shipping and shipbuilding from a technological and strategic point of view and a discussion on the technological policy for autonomous vessels at sea.
Mr. Lee Jeong-kie, Chairman and CEO of KR said: “I have no doubt that this seminar will be the platform to gather the shared resources of the Korean maritime industry together, and to collaborate on ways to use these resources to lead the global industry in the era of Shipping 4.0.”
