KR recently certified the 2^nd fleet Navy Shipyard of Korean Navy with a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), the first time that the Korean Navy has gained this certification. It is also a first for the Korean military in general – including the army and air force.

WPS is a guideline that provides detailed information regarding welding processes and has been developed to systematically manage welding work

plans and to enhance work quality. This certification is awarded by authorized bodies like KR when an organisation secures approval of its procedures and demonstrates strict observance of its operational terms.

The 2nd fleet Navy shipyard began working to secure WPS in 2016, and completed the relevant training at KR, leading to the shipyard being awarded with the certificate on 21 July 2017.

Following the WPS certification, KR expects to contribute to the enhancement of the shipyards’ hull repair quality, as well as the strengthening and survivability of its combat ships and maximization of combat capability.      

KR launched the Naval Business Center in collaboration with the Korean Navy, and has developed the in-house design and building standards for combat and surface ships – providing the Korean Navy with a wide range of technical services. These include surveys on the new building of naval vessels including submarines and safety inspections of diving equipment.
